ABOUT US

The Role of the Djembe

The original djembe is a type of funnelled hollow wood from a tree trunk with the top of the djembe wider than the bottom. It would normally have goat skin covering the top circumference of the djembe and tied down with a special rope that tightens the skin to give the djembe that nice base and slap sound. Our teaching approach is to help you get better at playing and play the djembe well.

We will be using methods to help you learn at home using the ‘RaphaRhythm’ format.

RaphaRhythm means “Healing Rhythms.””

“Know the beats you play.”

There is a reason and a purpose for every beat! With the traditional West African beat you will understand that they played for a purpose or a mission. The West African Kuku rhythm is basically about the women coming back home from fishing.

Contemporary style is being creative and learning rhythms that are not traditionally from West Africa but being able to combine the 3 Tones to make your own modern rhythms.
